Law Officers: 'We were fair, dispassionate and right in abuse prosecution decisions'

Jersey Care Inquiry Photo: ITV

The QC representing Jersey's Law Officers department has told the inquiry investigating historical child abuse that claims of corruption and cover up are "ill founded and without any support."

The evidence that has been put forward does not demonstrate that the bringing of prosecutions was in any way compromised by the political and social environment that existed at the time.

He also said that, despite earlier criticism from witnesses, there was no evidence that called into question the actions of the Law Officers Department.

He summarised the work of the department, which prosecutes cases in the island's courts, as 'fair, dispassionate and right.'

The threshold for prosecuting any allegation, no matter how serious, is set deliberately high and the task of those deciding whether or not to charge suspects is a difficult one.
