Attracting UK mobile phone operators to Jersey could tackle the problem of high roaming charges, according to the Channel Island Competition Regulator.
It comes as Britain is bringing an end to expensive charges abroad, under EU law.
Michael Byrne, from CICRA, says that is not possible here, but there are other options.
He told ITV News there are three ways of making sure islanders get a good deal when it comes to using their phone on the mainland.
- Asking local operators to bring in protections against high roaming charges
- Asking local operators to work with UK operators
- Attracting UK operators to provide services in the islands
Mr Byrne says protections have already been put in place by local companies, but they should be working harder to negotiate with UK companies.
He added CICRA are working on all three options, and looking at what will make the islands attractive to mainland operators.
