Jersey's Bailiff has waded into the debate over whether to scrap his dual role within the States, calling the proposal "illogical and unnecessary."

Sir William Bailhache has also criticised the Independent Care Inquiry for exploring the matter without seeking his views.

In a four-page letter to the Chief Minister, he says the inquiry was wrong to question a system which he says played no part in the extent of historical child abuse or the failure to expose it.

He has also suggested that a referendum may be one of the ways to determine the future of the dual role.
