Better scrutiny of decisions needed, says Alderney Chamber of Commerce

Alderney Chamber of Commerce wants to see better scrutiny of decisions by the Island’s government.

The organisation made the recommendation, and a string of others, in response to a public consultation by the States on governance.

The Chamber said the government of Alderney currently lacked “scrutiny, responsibility and accountability".

This is not acceptable for open and credible government – especially within such a small community. The appointment of an Ombudsman could be a way forward.

There should always be the avenue for the public, elected members and unelected civil servants to be able to voice concern and to be confident that such concern will be heard by an independent person who has the ability to act appropriately.
