Calls for delay in plans for elected speaker

A States committee is calling for a delay in plans to have an elected speaker of Jersey's Assembly.

If members approve them, Senator Ian Gorst wants the change to be introduced after next year's election.

He has lodged a proposition which would mean the Bailiff would no longer hold the position, and instead an elected member would be chosen from the assembly.

However, the Privileges and Procedures Committee say more time is needed to prepare for the legislative change.
