Discussions over assisted dying would be welcomed by an Alderney States member.

It comes as a petition has been launched in a bid to introduce the right to die in the island.

James Dent says it's possible the subject could be debated by politicians in the future.

The Chairman of Alderney's Policy and Finance Committee, says it is an option he would choose for himself if his quality of life declined.

The topic was highlighted recently, when a local campaigner launched a petition to introduce the right to die in Alderney a week ago.

Douglas Wilson watched his father's long battle with Alzheimers and believes assisted dying is a fundamental human right. So far the petition has 221 signatures.
