Places of worship not forced to conduct same-sex marriages that go against religious laws

Churches, chapels and other places of worship will not be forced to conduct same-sex marriages that go against their religious laws, if an amendment to the draft marriage law is passed.

The Corporate Scrutiny Panel announced several proposed changes today, including a 'tolerance clause' that would be extended to those who couldn't conduct the nuptuals on religious grounds.

The dilemma facing the Panel has been the balance between the rights of people to enjoy a family life and the rights of people to live by their religious conviction.

This has been a difficult area and we have received a lot of submissions on the matter from members of the public and organisations.
