A backpacker with links to Herm who was stabbed to death in Australia, has been nominated for an international bravery award.

30-year-old Thomas Jackson worked in the island from 2012 to 2013, as a waiter at the White House Hotel.

He was attacked while trying to save the life of Mia Ayliffe-Chung, who died during the knife attack in Queensland on August 23.

Tribute to Australia hostel 'Hero' who worked in Herm

Thomas Jackson suffered severe head injuries in the attack

Local colleagues have paid tribute to Thomas Jackson, who died after trying to save a fellow backpacker as she was stabbed at a hostel in Australia.

The 30-year-old, who suffered severe head injuries after being repeatedly stabbed in the attack in Queensland, worked at the White House Hotel on Herm as a waiter from 2012 to 2013.

He was critically injured when he tried to save Mia Ayliffe-Chung's life, and police confirmed today he has died in hospital.

Herm CEO, Jonathan Watson, said Thomas made some "very good, lifelong friends" on the island and was a "good character".

The news is absolutely devastating, given the act he was doing when he died was incredibly courageous.

Trident: We want to reassure public after groundings

Trident V boat

Trident boat company are reassuring the public, after their boat grounded on rocks twice this year.

A report was published today which found passengers were put at risk because of poor planning and complacency.

The company called the two collisions 'unacceptable' and said changes have now been made.

More training is being provided for crew members, the Alligande Passage is now out of bounds during low tides and poor visibility and new equipment is being bought 'with no expense spared'.

I would like to personally reassure our valued customers and friends, past and present that we will always act in their best interests, by doing so we will endeavour to make every effort to provide a safe and reliable service to enable all to enjoy Herm Island.
