A man has been jailed for raping a sex worker in Manchester.

Jason Edwards, aged 21, of no fixed abode, was found guilty of rape following a trial at Manchester Crown Court.

He was sentenced to seven years in prison, with a further three years on licence and must sign the Sex Offenders' Register for life.

On Wednesday October 13, 2010, a 39-year-old woman was standing at the junction of Fairfield Street and St Andrews Street when she was approached by Edwards.

He wanted to take her to a wooded area but she refused and suggested they went to Helmet Street. When they arrived, Edwards hit her head on the floor and raped her before he ran off.

He was later arrested after blood found on his trainers matched that of his victim.

Detective Constable Matthew Bolger from North Manchester CID said: "Edwards thought that because of the industry the victim worked in, he could do whatever he wanted and get away with it.

"No one should be put through an ordeal like this and she was left with cuts and bruises to her face and body.

The victim showed bravery in coming forward and helping us build a case against Edwards and now he is behind bars.

– DC Matthew Bolger, North Manchester CID

"Thanks to forensic examinations of the scene, we were able to arrest Edwards and make him pay for the vile crime he committed."
