All this week, ITV are running their 'From the Heart' campaign to raise awareness of organ donation. The aim is to encourage more people to volunteer to join the NHS Organ Donor Register, and to talk to their loved ones about their wishes.
As part of this, Granada Reports will be running a series of special reports every day this week, looking at the issues behind the campaign. We'll explore and highlight the shortage of donated organs, its implications and the reasons behind it, focus on the recipients of donor organs and how lives can be transformed, and ultimately how everyone across the North West has the opportunity to make a difference, giving a gift this Valentines Day that could potentially transform the lives of others.
Here in the North West there are more than 1,200 people in need of an organ transplant. At the moment, 430 people in our region will get a transplant every year yet 3 people will die every day in the UK waiting for that life-saving call. That's because there is currently an acute shortage of donors. Just 31% of the population are signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register.
A dedicated webpage www.itv.com/fromtheheart has more information about how you can join the register. If you've signed up, we'd love you to send us your pictures and join the #Fromtheheart campaign.
