Councillor Pat Karney, Manchester City Council's city centre spokesperson said:"We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic news and our heartfelt thoughts, as well as the thoughts of everyone in Manchester, go out to the firefighter's family, friends and colleagues."This is the third serious fire in the Northern Quarter in the last couple of months and we shall be meeting with the Chief Fire Officer to advise owners and businesses in the area of fire safety. "The council will be working with businesses to ensure that they have the support they need during this time.Our thoughts are also with the injured firefighter and his family at this terrible time. "
A fire service which lost one of its firefighters during a blaze at a city centre shop has closed the incident with an official ceremony.
