Oscar winning actress Meryl Streep will play Manchester born Emmeline Pankhurst in the upcoming film Suffragette. ScreenDaily understands that Streep's role will be small but important, Carey Mulligan also stars in the film which will be based on true events in the early feminist movement.

Emmeline Pankhurst was born in Moss Side in Manchester in 1858 and became infamous for resorting to militant tactics as a means of protest against gender inequality. Pankhurst and her followers were sentenced to repeated stints in prison, where they staged hunger strikes to secure better conditions.
