Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney has been given a make over in vegetables for World Vegetarian Day.

Sir Paul, who is a vocal vegetarian, had the salady portait courtesy of the campaign group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

The work was created by food artist Prudence Staite, who also made a portrait of Liverpool comedian John Bishop, also a vegetarian.

McCartney is depicted with cabbage and asparagus hair, with a carrot tie and a parsnip shirt.

"Many years ago, I was fishing, and as I was reeling in the poor fish, I realised, 'I am killing him – all for the passing pleasure it brings me' - and something inside me clicked.

"I realised as I watched him fight for breath that his life was as important to him as mine is to me,"

World Vegetarian Day takes place each year on October 1.

According to Peta, 20 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds in the UK are vegetarian.
