Police are searching for the driver of a silver Mercedes which failed to stop after it struck a pedestrian in Cheadle on Boxing Day.

The victim, a 40-year-old man, was walking along High Street, Cheadle, when he was hit by the car at the junction with Ashfield Road, just before 8pm.

The car, a Mercedes A-Class, travelled 60 metres down the road with the man trapped underneath, before he came free.

He was left with serious injuries in the middle of the road. The car then drove off.

The victim was taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

This man has been left with serious injuries to his head and chest as a result of this collision, though it does not at this stage look like he will die as a result of his injuries.

We know the man had been drinking in the nearby George and Dragon pub earlier in the evening and that he had been ejected from the premises, though it is not thought at this stage to be linked to the collision.

We need people who were in the area at the time of the collision to come forward and assist us with our enquiries.

If you saw the collision, or anything which you believe may assist the investigation, please contact police as a matter of urgency.
