Police identify man whose body was found in burnt out car

A man whose body was found inside a burnt out car in Liverpool had been subjected to a 'sustained assault' and suffered a 'severe head injury' before his death, police said.

Detectives have identified the man's body which was found inside a burnt out car in Everton om Thursday night.

The man is believed to have been in his 50s and from north Liverpool.

Police are in the process of informing his next of kin.

Officers have not yet released the cause of death due to further investigation.

A 31-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, from Bootle, have been released under investigation.

Emergency services were called to Whitehaven Road at around 11.10pm to a report of a car on fire.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished the fire before finding the body of a man inside the car.
