Police have recovered a gun overnight after a man was stabbed in Heywood, near Rochdale.

Armed officers were sent to a house on High Street just after 7pm on Tuesday to reports of a man with a firearm. They found a man in his 40s who was bleeding heavily. He's now being treated in hospital.

Police say the man may have been involved in an incident on Albert Street on the junction with Bury Road and are appealing for any witnesses.

A search of the area was immediately conducted and a firearm was recovered.

We have detectives and forensics in the area and a cordon is currently in place whilst they carry out their investigation.

Early enquiries suggest this man suffered serious injuries on Albert Street and somehow made his way along High Street at about 7pm.

He would have been bleeding significantly and we believe someone would have seen him during this time as it is a busy road.

It is vital that anyone who has any information about what happened should contact police immediately.

I know an incident of this nature will cause concern in the community and we will have extra officers in the area over the coming days.

If you have any concerns then please approach them and they will try to assist in any way they can.

In the meantime, detectives will be working round the clock to get to the bottom of what happened.
