Police are appealing for witnesses after thieves ripped a cash machine from a shop front in Preesall using a stolen fork-lift truck.

The burglary occurred around 3.50am this morning at the Co-op convenience store on Sandy Lane.

The offenders stole the vehicle from nearby, before driving it into the shop front to knock down a wall and get away with the cash machine.

Police are asking for anybody with information to get in touch, particularly anybody who may have seen a car and van together at the time of the incident.

They are also urging local landowners in the surrounding area to report any recent suspicious activity involving plant machinery and to check for anything that could have been left by the offenders.

DS Ian Wright, of Lancaster Police, said:

These offenders have made off with a significant quantity of cash, leaving a trail of destruction behind them.

“We are now working extremely hard to piece together exactly what occurred and find those responsible, and would urge anybody with information to contact us as soon as possible.

“In particular we are urging landowners to check their property for anything which may be connected to this incident and may have been dumped by the offenders as they left the scene. We would also like to speak to anybody who was in the area at the time of the offence and saw something which seemed suspicious or out of place.”
