The former Head of Education at Rochdale Council has made an emotional apology to the boys who were abused at a residential care unit in the 1990s.

Diana Cavanagh has already told a hearing in London looking into the exploitation of children as young as eight, that more could and should have been done by her council to keep them safe.

She said:

In so far as my part in these matters it has meant some of the former pupils have suffered abuse and subsequent trauma and unhappiness - I am truly sorry."

Abuse began at Knowl View residential school when it was set up by late Liberal MP Cyril Smith twenty years earlier.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse is examining how the late politician and others were able to target youngsters at institutions in Rochdale over several decades.
