Flowers have been laid outside the house of Vincent Kershaw, 85, who was found battered to death in Rochdale.
Greater Manchester Police say they're treating the motive as robbery.
Detectives say Mr Kershaw was carrying a large amount of cash with him, possibly as much as £3000, shortly before he died.
No arrests have been made and police are continuing to investigate.

Police have released a photo of an 85-year-old man who was found battered to death in his own home in Rochdale.
Vincent Kershaw was found with head injuries after police visited his house on Sunday afternoon following reports he had not been seen by his neighbours on Willows Lane, in Milnrow.
Police are continuing to investigate Mr Kershaw's death.

We are in the early stages of the investigation and are working to establish the full circumstances of what has happened.
Following a post mortem examination we do not believe this man’s death was accidental.

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Rochdale.
Police were called to a house on Willows Lane, Milnrow, following concerned reports for the welfare of the 85-year-old man who lived there.
Officers attended at around 5.10pm last Sunday and the man was found deceased.
