Armed police have surrounded a house in Stretford after a man armed with a crossbow threatened police and social workers and barricaded himself inside.
A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of affray and threats to kill after armed police engaged in a stand-off. It followed reports that a man armed with a crossbow had barricaded himself in a house in Stretford.
"First and foremost I would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding.
“This was an incident which required a highly sensitive response and it is inevitable that took some time.
“The man in question will get all of the support he needs and we continue to work with our partners to progress this.”
'Man handcuffed and led away' after crossbow siege
Armed officers have handcuffed a man and taken him away from the scene of a crossbow siege in a police van, according to Sky News' north of England correspondent Mike McCarthy.
Police and negotiators are trying to bring a safe end to an armed siege involving a man with a crossbow, a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said.
I would reassure the local community not to be overly alarmed by what is happening as highly trained officers are currently dealing with this incident.
We have put a cordon in place around the house as part of the co-ordinated police response that is normally implemented when an incident of this nature occurs.
As part of this, a small number of officers who are there are armed, but the main focus of our efforts is through the negotiating team.
