A new special care baby unit is to open at Furness General Hospital. It will mean more babies can be cared for at their mother's side. There will also be a new family room.
Investigations are continuing into the deaths of a number of babies at the hospital.
– Sheila Lloyd, assistant chief nurse for children's services.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for those newborn babies needing special care to be cared for in a beautiful purpose built setting, whilst at the same time enabling babies that need just a small amount of additional support to be cared for at mum's bedside.
"SCBU staff will work even more closely with their midwifery colleagues, putting babies and their families at the centre of everything they do."
