Michael Adebowale appeared in the dock flanked by two police officers and two security guards and with a bandage on one arm.
Limping as he approached the glass dock, he held his right hand close to his body.
Chief magistrate Howard Riddle told the defendant he was not required to stand due to his injuries.
A prison van believed to be carrying Woolwich suspect Michael Adebowale left Westminster Magistrates' Court a few moments ago.
He is being held in custody until his next court appearance at the Old Bailey on Monday.
