Sir Bradley Wiggins has made a triumphant return to the region.
He won stage three of the Tour of Britain today. The time trial took the Chorley rider through a very soggy Knowsley Safari Park.
The Manx missile, Mark Cavendish was also in action. An exciting sight for thousands of people and animals alike.
Tim Scott reports
Sir Bradley Wiggins produced a dominant performance to win the Tour of Britain time trial and go top of the general classification.
The Team Sky rider clocked 19 minutes 54.20 seconds over stage three - a 16kilometre course that started and ended in Knowsley Safari Park.
That was enough to propel him into the gold jersey, a position he will now aim to defend over the next five days of racing.
Wiggins, who has endured a difficult season including a failed bid at the Giro d'Italia, was 32 seconds ahead of team-mate and fellow Briton Ian Stannard, who registered 20mins 26secs.
