A retired police sergeant who inflicted "appalling" sexual and physical child abuse on two victims is to be sentenced later.

Jeffrey Lake, 78, was extradited from his home in Australia to stand trial at Preston Crown Court on the offences - most of which were committed when he was a police officer in Accrington, Lancashire and Liverpool.

He was found guilty of rape, gross indecency, indecent assault, cruelty and two other sexual offences.

The offences relate to two victims, a girl and a boy.

Lake was arrested by police in Australia in February on suspicion of the sexual and physical abuse of children.

He was detained at an address in Peregian Springs, Queensland, on behalf of Lancashire Constabulary and subsequently extradited to the UK in March.
