A mother from Oldham has been charged with the murder of her 7 week old son.
Katarzyna Gacek, her boyfriend and a lodger have been also been charged with child neglect. Thomas Gacek died from head injuries on Tuesday.

A mother from Oldham has been in court charged with the murder of her 7 week old son.

Thomas Gacek died from head injuries on Tuesday.

His mother Katarzyna Gacek, appeared before magistrates earlier.

Two men are due before magistrates this afternoon.

Statement from the family of Thomas Gacek

In a statement, Thomas's family said: "As a family, we are all truly devastated and deeply shocked by the tragedy we have all suffered and the loss of our little baby boy.

"We are a private family and, as such, we would ask the media allow us time to grieve in peace and come to terms with this tragic situation we have all found ourselves in.

"We are aware that there are numerous stories in circulation at present. However, we would ask that only official police statements given by Greater Manchester Police are taken as factually correct."

The mother of a seven-week-old baby boy who died from severe head injuries will appear in court today charged with murder and child neglect.

Katarzyna Gacek, 24, of Hillside Avenue, Oldham, is accused of killing her son Thomas Gacek.

Darren Butterfield, 35, of Ross Avenue, Chadderton, and Dawid Mokrzanowski, 26, of Hillside Avenue, have been charged with child neglect.

The three will appear at Oldham Magistrates Court later today.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Thomas died as a result of serious head injuries "consistent with a non-accidental injury".

Forensic examinations have taken place at his home on Hillside Avenue in the Clarksfield area of Oldham.

According to her Facebook page Katarzyna is originally from Jaslo in Poland.

Police reassure local community after baby's death in Oldham

Police are continuing to question two men and a woman arrested after the death of a seven-week-old baby boy from severe head injuries.

Greater Manchester Police said they were not in a position to name the baby, who lived in the Clarksfield area of Oldham.

The 23-year-old woman, thought to be the child's mother, and a 35-year-old man originally arrested on suspicion of assault were rearrested on suspicion of murder and conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

A 26-year-old man is also under arrest on suspicion of murder and conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

"This is a tragic case in which a very young baby has lost his life and we are determined to find out exactly what the circumstances were that led to him suffering such injuries.

"News of the death of such a little boy will no doubt come as a great shock to people and I would like to try to reassure the community that we have a team of detectives dedicated to working on this investigation, and they will today be interviewing the three people in our custody.

Police given more time to question three people over baby's death

Detectives have been given more time to question three people on suspicion of murdering a seven week old baby boy.

A warrant for further detention was granted at 6.30pm last night giving police a further 30 hours to question two men and a woman from Oldham, whose believed to be the baby's mother.

A post mortem examination revealed the baby died of severe head injuries.
