Thousands of chickens saved from the abattoir

Thousands of chickens have found a new homes at a farm in Salford having been spared the abattoir.

They were rescued after the truck taking them for slaughter crashed on the M62 at Barton Moss.

The lorry was carrying 6,800 live chickens and shed crates across the carriageway.

Delayed motorists faced miles of tailbacks while the vehicle and debris were cleared.

Workers at an animal rescue centre in Barton Moss helped around 3,000 chickens off the motorway and onto their farm - before calling on locals to re-home them.

1,500 chickens killed in M62 crash

The lorry which crashed on the M62 was carrying 6,800 live chickens and shed crates across the carriageway.

Delayed motorists faced miles of tailbacks while the vehicle and debris were cleared.

Around 1,500 chickens were killed, the Highways Agency said, with many others escaping onto the carriageway.

The lorry driver was not injured.

Traffic is still queuing on the M62 Eastbound after a lorry carrying chickens crashed spilling the live birds across the carriageway. It happened at 4:15am this morning between J11 A574 (Birchwood) and J12 M60 / M602 (Eccles Interchange).

Emergency crews are working to clear the chickens and debris from the road. There are diversions in place, but drivers are facing long delays and have been advised to avoid the area.

M62 Cheshire closed after lorry full of chickens crashes

M62 Eastbound closed, queueing traffic due to chickens on road, recovery work and accident, a lorry involved between J11 A574 (Birchwood) and J12 M60 / M602 (Eccles Interchange), congestion on M62 to J9 A49 (Winwick).

The lorry went into the crash barrier and shed its load of 6000 live chickens around 04:15. The road is expected to remain closed for most of the morning as a barrier and a lamppost have been damaged in the accident.
