Tributes to taxi death pair

The families of a taxi driver an his passenger who dies after a head on crash in Leigh have paid tribute to them. Shortly before 4am on Saturday the cab was involved in an accident with another car on Twist Lane at the junction with Kendal Grove.

The driver of the taxi, 59-year-old Kenneth Grimshaw from the Leigh area, suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene.Emma Houghton, 23 and from the Golborne area, was a rear-seat passenger in the taxi and was taken to hospital with a serious head injury, but died on Saturday evening.

The driver of the Astra, a 34-year-old man, was taken to hospital for treatment to serious leg injuries but has since been discharged.

Kenneth’s family said: “Ken was a loving, devoted father to his two daughters and a caring granddad to his three young grandchildren, who became a focal point in his life in the last few years.

Ken was a truly larger than life character who was always smiling and found humour in almost every situation. He will be remembered by everyone who knew him as a good-hearted, kind, family-oriented man. He will be sadly missed by everyone whose life he touched. Rest in peace, Ken.”

Emma’s family said: “Taken from us too early, Emma was a young girl that loved life. Emma will be missed dearly by all those that loved her and still love her.”

Police Constable Paul Hailwood said: “Our thoughts continue to be with the families of Ken and Emma, as they try to come to terms with the devastating events of this weekend, and we are supporting them as best we can at this difficult time.

“We are carrying out a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances leading up to this collision, so we can provide the families of all involved with some much needed answers as to what exactly happened on Saturday morning.

“We are asking for any witnesses that saw either the silver Astra or the metallic blue Mondeo private-hire taxi driving shortly before this incident occurred, to contact us.”

Woman injured in taxi crash dies in hospital

A woman who was critically injured in a collision in Leigh yesterday has died.

The 23-year-old woman, who has been named as Emma Houghton from the Golborne area, was a passenger travelling in the rear seat of a taxi when it collided with another car.

The driver of the taxi, 59-year-old Kenneth Grimshaw from the Leigh area, suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene.

A taxi driver has been killed, and his woman passenger critically injured, after a car crash in Greater Manchester.

The accident happened on the A578 Twist Lane in Leigh, at 4am this morning, when the Ford Mondeo taxi hit a Vauxhall Astra.

The 59-year-old cab driver died at the scene. His passenger is in a critical condition. The driver of the Astra is also seriously ill in hospital.

A taxi driver has been killed, and his woman passenger critically injured, after a car crash in Greater Manchester.

The accident happened on Twist Lane in Leigh, at 4am this morning, when the Ford Mondeo taxi hit a Vauxhall Astra.

Bolton crash - drivers thought to be racing

Two drivers are thought to have been racing each other when they collided in Greater Manchester, leaving a 12-year-old boy fighting for his life.

The youngster and a 50-year-old man were knocked down by one of the speeding vehicles in Daubhill, Bolton, on Sunday.

It is thought two Vauxhall Astra cars had been speeding along St Helens Road at about 11.30pm when they both hit a BMW 320 which pulled into the road.

The force of the crash meant one of the Astras left the road and hit the two pedestrians.

The boy remains in a critical condition and the man in a stable condition, said police.

Nine other people from the three vehicles suffered minor injuries.

One of the Astra drivers, a 20-year-old man, remains in hospital, while the other walked off while being treated by paramedics and efforts are continuing to find him.

A schoolboy is critically ill after a major car crash in Bolton.

A dozen people were injured in the smash on the A579 Derby Street in Daubhill.

The 12-year-old and a 50-year-old man, are in a critical condition in hospital.

The crash happened at 11.30pm last night.

Eyewitnesses say one vehicle ploughed into the pavement.
