Former Manchester United star held over assault

Former Manchester United player Danny Simpson was held by police over claims he was involved in an iron bar attack.

The 27-year-old, who now plays for QPR, is accused of confronting a man outside his Withington home after he suspected him of stealing his mobile phone in a nightclub.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault on Tuesday and later bailed pending further enquiries.

Police say the alleged victim, aged 34, suffered head injuries and is recovering in hospital.

Police were called at 8.15am on Tuesday 4 February 2014 to reports of an altercation outside a house on Princess Road near to the junction with Whitchurch Road in Withington.

Officers attended and discovered an 34-year-old man with head injuries. He was taken to hospital where his condition is stable.

An 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and bailed pending further enquiries.
