Dozens of residents have been forced to leave their homes after a fallen lamp post damaged a gas mains in Rochdale.
16 properties in the Manchester Road area of Castleton had to be evacuated because of the leak.
The M62 motorway between junctions 19 and 20 is still closed as a precaution.
Greater Manchester Police say they hope to re-open the road around 11pm tonight. National Grid engineers are working at the scene.

Engineers from the National Gird are dealing with the leak at Manchester Road in Castleton.
The M62 has been closed between junctions 19 and 20 in both directions, which is affecting access to the A627M.
Manchester Road is also closed between Queensway and the Slattocks roundabout.
Around 16 properties have been evacuated by police as a precaution. No one has been injured.
Emergency crews evacuated homes in Runcorn's Windmill Hill overnight, after a fire and suspected gas leak.
Firefighters were called out just after 2am. Police officers and gas officials then cleared the area.
No-one was injured. People have now been allowed back into the area.
