New Southport manager Kevin Davies has revealed he spoke to his old boss Sam Allardyce before taking the job with the National League North side.
Davies, who retired from playing in 2015, has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the club.
He spoke to ITV Granada's sports correspondent Mike Hall.
Former Preston and Bolton striker Kevin Davies insists he isn't ready to hang up his boots just yet - but is still without a club for next season.
With just over a week to go until the new campaign kicks off, the 38-year-old says he still has plenty to offer on the pitch and would like to play on for one more season.
He was released by Preston in the summer after two seasons at Deepdale and admits to being disappointed by the time taken for North End to inform him of their decision.
