New Labour MP takes seat in Commons

The new Labour MP for Manchester Central has taken her seat in the Commons.

Lucy Powell was elected last week with a majority of 9,936 in a by-election called following her predecessor Tony Lloyd's decision to run for police and crime commissioner.

The turnout of 18.16% in the safe Labour seat was reportedly the lowest in a parliamentary by-election since the Second World War.

Mancunian Ms Powell served as Ed Miliband's deputy chief of staff and ran his campaign to become leader of the Labour Party
