Hammer throw bronze medallist has ballet dancer past

The mother of Olympic medallist Sophie Hitchon has revealed she started out as a ballet dancer.

The athlete from Burnley won a bronze medal in the women's hammer throw at the Rio Olympics and became the first British woman to win an Olympic medal in the discipline.

She recorded a distance of 74.54m at the Olympic Stadium on Monday.

Burnley Hammer Thrower Sophie Hitchon became the first UK athlete to confirm her place in Team GB for the Olympics at the Aviva Athletics Trials in Birmingham.

Her throw of 69.79m ensured a top 2 finish. The 20-year-old had already achieved the coveted A Standard earlier this year throwing 71.62m
