Scheme to keep women prisoners close to their family

A scheme to stop women re-offending by getting them into work will be piloted at Styal prison in Cheshire.

Female inmates will serve their sentences closer to home and be offered skills to help them after their release. The proposals have been welcomed by some prisoners who told us how tough it is being far away from their families.

Vicky and Stella who are serving time at the prison told Daybreak their views.

Plans to stop women returning to prison

When a female offender walks out of the prison gates, I want to make sure she never returns.

Keeping female prisoners as close as possible to their homes, and importantly their children, is vital if we are to help them break the pernicious cycle of re-offending.

And providing at least a year of support in the community, alongside the means to find employment on release, will give them the best possible chance to live productive, law abiding lives.
