Locals declare victory in campaign to keep Westmorland General Hospital open

Campaigners in Cumbria have declared victory in their efforts to save their local hospital from closure.

It's believed bosses at Westmorland General were considering closing or privatising the hospital.

8500 people had signed a petition against the proposals, and today Cumbria and Lancashire North Clinical Commissioning Groups and the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust which runs the hospital confirmed it will remain open, and in public hands.

MP welcomes hospital inquiry

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the move by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust to review its maternity and neonatal services.

Mr Farron said the inquiry is "an overdue but welcome step forward to get justice for victims" of past failings.

"This inquiry is overdue and is something we have called for over many months in meetings with the trust and with health ministers.

"I think it is vital we get to the truth of what happened and that people are held accountable for their actions. I want this review to be serious, rigorous and fair so I look forward to seeing the terms of reference.

“I do not want this report to be a whitewash, it must be fair and honest and the trust must be prepared to hold their hands up and admit major failings. I_ will make sure that this report lands on health ministers' desks and I will continue to press for an external and public inquiry after the police have finished their investigations.”_

Olympic tickets donated to soldiers

Thousands of spare Olympic tickets will be given to members of the Armed Forces, after a Twitter campaign involving South Lakes MP Tim Farron.

The campaign was launched when news broke that more than 200,000 were spare.

Now the organisers have announced that through the charity Tickets for Troops over 10,000 Olympic and Paralympic tickets have been donated.

I am absolutely delighted that the Olympics organizers have listened to our Twitter campaign to show our thanks to our armed forces by giving them the spare tickets to both the Olympics and Paralympics. The service and commitment that our military has shown by agreeing to step in and ensure that security for these major international events is not compromised for a second is fantastic, and they deserve all of our thanks and support.”
