Traffic jams in the region are getting worse says new report

Traffic jams in Manchester and Liverpool are getting worse according to a new survey. During the rush hour drivers can expect to face journey times more than 70 per cent longer then normal.

In the worst-congested cities, evening rush-hour journeys are taking more than 70% longer than they would in free-flowing traffic, the poll by traffic information company TomTom found.

Congestion levels have got worse over the past year in:

  • London
  • Brighton and Hove
  • Nottingham, Leicester
  • Birmingham
  • Portsmouth
  • Cardiff
  • Belfast
  • Edinburgh
  • Manchester
  • Liverpool
  • Newcastle
  • Glasgow
  • Southampton

TomTom Traffic vice-president Ralf-Peter Schaefer said: "Road authorities and local governments can use traffic data to better manage traffic flow and businesses can plan smarter working hours, so their employees avoid travelling during the rush-hour."

Traffic update - M65 Eastbound

Queueing traffic and road closed due to accident, two lorries involved on M65 Eastbound between J1 M6 ( Lostock Hall) and J2 M61 (Clayton Brook). One of the lorries is reported to have overturned. Affecting traffic towards the M61. Separate from the broken down vehicle on the opposite carriageway.

Lorry crash brings delays to the M61 in Bolton

Part of the M61 northbound in Bolton is closed after a HGV crashed into an embankment leaving debris on the motorway, damaging other cars.

No one was injured in the incident at just after 5.10am.

The northbound carriageway has been closed and a diversion is in place from junction 5 onto Manchester Road, Chorley Road and back onto the motorway at junction 6.
