A group of experts from the University of Central Lancashire are developing a car engine which can do more than a thousand miles a gallon.

But thanks to a group at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, a giant leap may just be around the corner.
They have teamed up with a firm that makes mattresses to produce a trainer with springs in the soles.

A team at the University of Central Lancashire worked with a mattress manufacturer to shrink the mattress supports into the soles, to try to reduce running-related injuries.
"If you had a car suspension with just a damper and no spring in it then you'd have a very bumpy ride. Therefore having a shoe that incorporates both provides a much improved shock-absorbing system compared with existing technology," says UCLAN's Professor Jim Richards.
"We will also be able to tweak the arrangement for each individual runner", he says, "which is particularly important because everyone has a different running style and physiology that impacts on their risk of different types of injury."
