Police statement on WW1 bomb found in West Didsbury

Greater Manchester Police have released a statement after a suspected WW1 shell was found by residents in West Didsbury.

Shortly before 1.15pm on Wednesday 31 October 2012, police were called to Burton Road, West Didsbury, following reports of a WW1 shell being found.

Officers attended and identified the location.

An Explosive Ordinance Disposal team attended and recovered the device.

As a precaution, a cordon was put in place which was lifted by 3.20pm and all those evacuated were allowed to return to their properties.

A suspected WW1 bomb has been found in a cellar in Manchester.

Our correspondent Elaine Willcox is at the scene and tweeted the above picture. Elaine says: "Several roads have been closed in West Didsbury while bomb disposal experts assess the scene. The foot long device was found in a cellar"
