Police are appealing for information following an attempted kidnap in Whalley Range.
At around 5.10pm on Friday January 20, a 37-year-old woman came out of Tesco Express on Chorlton Road.
As she approached Whitehorn Avenue and crossed the road, an man suddenly appeared and grabbed her throat.
He pulled her towards him, but she managed to hit him with her bag, which caused him to release his grip.
The victim then escaped and ran home.
The offender did not attempt to steal anything from her.
The man is described as white or mixed race, 5ft 11in tall, of slim build, with acne scars on the left side of his face.
He was wearing a plain black baseball cap, a dark hooded top which was bunched up at the back, and dark pants.
Detective Constable Christopher Clarke, of GMP’s City of Manchester Team, said:
This was a terrifying incident which caused the victim to fear for her life and left her extremely shaken.
Thankfully, she managed to escape with only some tenderness to her throat, but the outcome could have undoubtedly been much more serious.
I am appealing to anyone who was in the area at that time, or anyone who recognises the description of the offender, to please get in touch as soon as possible.

I simply can't comprehend how anyone can be prepared to physically attack and rob a woman who is elderly and of slight build.
The victim should have every right to walk down the street without fear of being attacked, and now this cowardly and wicked thief has taken that away from her. She will undoubtedly be forever looking over her shoulder because of what has happened.
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A man with kidney failure was robbed and beaten on his own doorstep in Whalley Range. The attack took place last Friday whilst the man was returning from hospital after treatment.
It's believed the offenders followed the 51 year old victim him and jumped him from behind.
As he was being attacked, one of the offenders asked for the man’s Kara which is the Punjabi word for bangle. After a brief struggle, one of the offenders ripped a rare and unusual necklace off the victim. The necklace has a real tiger tooth covered in gold and is worth more than £1,500.
Eventually, the two offenders forced their way into the victim’s home which set off the burglar alarm, causing them to flee.
This was an absolutely disgusting and cowardly attack on a vulnerable and frail man who needs dialysis treatment three times a week for kidney failure.I have no doubt people who are reading or hearing this will be absolutely disgusted and I would implore people to use that sense of anger and indignation to help us catch the despicable offenders responsible for this crime. What makes it even more upsetting is that we believe this man has been deliberately targeted as he returned from treatment, as the offenders knew exactly what to ask for and eventually stole a very rare and valuable necklace.
