A lorry driver from Rochdale has been killed in a freak accident while making a delivery.

William Ernest Barker, from Milnrow, died when a car park barrier fell onto his truck, crushing the cab.

The 68-year-old, who worked for Heywood-based haulage firm Wincanton, was making a delivery to an Argos store in Oswestry, Shropshire.

Shocked passers-by rushed to Mr Barker’s aid, but were unable to free him and he died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services.

An inquest into Mr Barker’s death has been opened by Shropshire coroner John Ellery.
