Girl seriously ill after being swept out to sea in Lancashire

A 16 year old girl is in a serious condition in hospital after being swept away with the tide at Heysham.

The girls, aged 16 and 14 from Bolton, were paddling when it is thought that they got into some difficulty in the water at around 5pm between Ocean Edge and Middleton Sands at North Quay in Heysham.

The coastguard was called but fortunately one of the girls managed to swim back to the shore whilst the other was rescued by a passing small boat.

They have been taken to Royal Lancaster Infirmary to be checked over. The 14 year old is said to be shaken and suffered superficial injuries. In the latest update the 16 year old girl is said to be in a serious condition and remains in hospital.
