Watch: Chester Zoo celebrates International Orangutan Day

It's International Orangutan Day today and Chester Zoo has released m some great footage of their Sumatran orangutans playing outside in the sunshine, swinging on ropes (similar to the gymnasts at Rio!) and teaching their young how to do roley poleys!

Sumatran orangutans are classed as critically endangered in the wild and there is thought be only 6,500 left in the wild, with their major threat being habitat destruction and the conversion of forests to agricultural land and unsustainable oil palm plantations in Sumatra.

Also, only last month Bornean orangutans had their threatened status upgraded to ‘critically endangered’ which sadly means that both species of orangutan now face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.
