Homes evacuated after reports of suspicious package

Homes have been evacuated on a residential street in Oldham following reports of a suspicious package being found.

The bomb squad was scrambled to scene following reports a device had been discovered on Hillside Avenue in Clarksfield this morning.

The street has been cordoned off while officers investigate the package. It is understood the ‘suspicious package’ was found by builders who were working in an empty property.

Experts are assessing the package, a GMP spokesman said. A cordon is in place on the road.

Witnesses reported seeing a heavy police presence on the street. One resident said:

People are saying it’s a bomb which is worrying. Will have to wait and see what police find.
