MP slams company over 'devastating' job losses

An MP has vowed to lobby the Prime Minister after online retailer Shop Direct announced plans to pull out of Greater Manchester, with the loss of almost 2,000 jobs.

The company, which owns Littlewoods and Very, said it would begin to close its distribution centres in Shaw, Oldham, and Little Hulton in Salford, as well as its returns centre at Raven Mill in Chadderton, in 2020.

Debbie Abrahams, the Oldham East and Saddleworth MP, said she would be writing to Theresa May to demand the PM and government ministers are ‘fully engaged’ in supporting affected workers.

She also blasted the company for failing to engage with both herself and Oldham council before announcing the news.
