Mark Cavendish takes indefinite break from cycling to recover from illness

Manx cyclist Mark Cavendish has taken an indefinite break from cycling due to illness.

Medical tests confirmed that he's been suffering from Epstein-Barr virus, which he was diagnosed with in 2017 but raced two months later.

33-year-old Cavendish has had an unlucky 2018 so far - he suffered a broken rib in March that ended his participation in Tirreno-Adriatico.

This season I’ve not felt physically myself and despite showing good numbers on the bike I have felt that there’s been something not right. Given this and on the back of these medical results, I’m glad to now finally have some clarity as to why I haven’t been able to perform at my optimum level during this time.
