The funeral of the Surrey cricketer Tom Maynard has taken place today.

The 23-year-old was hit by a tube train in Wimbledon last month, after running away from police when they stopped his car. The funeral service was in his home city of Cardiff.

Maynard - the son of former Glamorgan cricket legend Matthew Maynard - was regarded by many as one of the sport's bright prospects. The Chairman of Surrey Cricket Club Richard Thompson paid tribute to the young star at the service today;

Tom Maynard was pronounced dead on June 18 after being struck by a tube train in Wimbledon, south London.

Last week Maynard's family paid an emotional thank-you to well-wishers.

A spokesman said: "Matthew, Sue and Ceri would like to reiterate their thanks to everyone for the many hundreds of cards, letters, emails and messages they have received following the tragic death of their son Tom.

"The level of support has been of real comfort to them."

An inquest has been opened and adjourned at Westminster Coroner's Court - with Dr Shirley Radcliffe saying "extensive investigations" were continuing.
