The Liberal Democrats have voted overwhelmingly in favour of rejecting plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport. Delegates at the party's conference in Brighton also voted against Boris Johnson's plans to construct an airport in the Thames Estuary.
Transport Minister Norman Baker told the party's conference in Brighton that if a third runway was built at Heathrow, it would generate more extra carbon emissions each year than Kenya and cause "untold extra misery" for hundreds of thousands of people in west London.
He added: "There will be no third runway at Heathrow on our watch".
The Liberal Democrats believe that other airports including Stansted and Gatwick could increase their capacity by making better use of their existing space.
