Boris Johnson's battle with rebel members of London's fire authority is likely to come to a head today after the mayor issued an ultimatum over cuts.

The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority will meet in emergency session to respond to the mayor's threat of legal action.

Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green members of LFEPA voted by a narrow majority earlier this month to defy a mayoral directive ordering the authority to begin a formal consultation.

Fire chiefs have proposed closing twelve fire stations and scrapping eighteen fire engines to plug a black hole in their budget.

Boris Johnson has set a deadline of 5pm for LFEPA to back down or be taken to court.
