Police report drop in London crime

Overall, reported crime has fallen - a reduction of 45,000 in the capital over the last year:

2012: 815, 443

2013: 770, 220

Drop of 5.5%

Following a crackdown on gang crime, serious youth violence has reduced by almost 30 per cent and gun crime has gone down by a fifth - their lowest levels in 5 years.

Serious youth violence:

2012: 6899

2013: 4968

The Met puts the decreases down to their crackdown on gang-crime, as Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley told our reporter Ronke Phillips:

But theft from a person has increased by 17 per cent. Of that, a new wave of mobile phone theft accounts for 70 per cent. Racist and religious hate crime is also on the up - a rise of 14.5 per cent.
