A security guard has suffered potentially life-changing injuries after armed robbers tried to smash their way into a jewellery shop using a moped, a sledgehammer and an axe.
One of the criminals sprayed people with a noxious liquid, believed to be ammonia, injuring a security guard. However staff managed to close the security shutters and the gang left without stealing anything.
The attempted raid took place at Watches of Switzerland in New Bond Street on Monday.
At about 11.05am, six men on three mopeds rode at speed from Oxford Street towards the store.
One of the mopeds rode on the pavement towards the shop, while the other two crossed on to the pavement when they reached the junction with Derring Street, scattering passers-by.
When they reached the store, the raiders, one of whom is believed to have had a handgun, rammed the door with a moped and struck it with a sledgehammer and an axe.
One man started to spray people who got close with a noxious liquid, injuring a guard.
Staff managed to operate the security shutters and the gang fled, again on the three mopeds, nearly knocking over a member of public.
