Commuter strips off on the tube to protest about the heat

A commuter is staging a bizarre a heatwave protest by travelling to work dressed only in boxer shorts. Mungo Strachan has been turning heads and raising eyebrows among fellow travellers on the District Line.

Mr Strachan, a 23-year-old headhunter, complains his journey from Baron's Court to Monument is unbearable in hot weather. He says he's campaigning for all Underground trains to be fitted with air conditioning.

London Underground says 40% of tube trains will be air conditioned within two years but some lines present a technical challenge.

David Waboso, LU's Capital Programmes Director said: "New air condition trains are now operating on the Metropolitan, Circle, Hammersmith & City and are currently being rolled out on the Wimbledon to Edgware Road branch of the District Line.

But we know there is still much to do and cooling the other deeper lines of the Tube remains a considerable engineering challenge.
